Will Trump's Iran War Backfire?
Will Trump's Iran War Backfire?
If there is anything Republicans learned from the Iraq War, it is nothing. Trump might be planning to start a war with Iran, a war, like George W. Bush with Iraq, could end up bitting Trump in the butt, which ironically goes against Putin's wishes. Trump's vision for the world is confusing and ignorant, believing tariffs can help the American economy, when in reality, it doesn't, sides with Israel but also sides with White Nationalists, calling them "very fine people", and going to war with Iran, which might mean alienating Trump's best friend, Vladimir Putin.
Republicans have long wanted a war with Iran, which it's why they opposed the Iran Deal, probably because -no oil, a resource that is dying anyway, that is why the Middle East goes to war with each other over oil. So what happens if Trump does invade Iran, well, a few things, an escalation of Progressive voter activity in the primaries of the Democratic Party, and general elections, which Republicans are trying to prevent, a probable backlash from the Americans if the war goes wrong, and Republicans losing 2020 in a 2008-like result.
Why Trump wants a war with Iran?
Party interests of course. Republicans want a war with Iran mightily because of they want oil, and a war wirh Iran would make the party's oil corporate donors millions, or even billions of dollars going into their pockets. Trump promised in 2016 that he would "drain the swamp", but a war with Iran to serve his party's corporate interests is not exactly draining the swamp. This is fake populism gone wrong. This is why the Republicans opposed Obama's Iran deal.
Does Trump need Congressional Approval for an Iran War?
The Constitution mandates that the President must ask Congress approval to declare war on a country, but sometimes the President can order an attack on a country without congressional approval. Trump can declare, as commander in chief, to send troops to a war as he or she please, or pull troops out of a war the President deems pointless.
Will It Backfire?
The question is will an Iran War blow up in Trump's face just like the Iraq War blew up in President Bush's face? It depends on the progress of the Iran War. If America ends up screwing up in the Iran War, then Trump will face a backlash, worst-case scenario, draft riots if Trump starts issuing drafts for the war, and intense protests, and a losing Republican Party. When President Lyndon B. Johnson started sending troops to Vietnam, America ended up losing the war, his Democratic Party lost seats in the 1966 midterm elections, and he faced draft riots and anti-war demonstrations. Abraham Lincoln had the same problem with the American Civil War, there were brutal and bloodier draft riots in the North, most prominently New York City.
The point is, the reason why Trump's Iran War may end disastrously is that Iran is a major power in the Middle East trapped in a Cold War with another Middle Eastern superpower, Saudi Arabia. When the Vietnam War was going on, the Vietnamese Communists was receiving help from China, a major power in Asia, as well as the Soviet Union, leading to America ending up doing poorly in the war, it didn't mean America was a weak nation, it is because fighting another superpower could be no-win path for the superpower who either started the war, or simply both superpowers, but there are exceptions, during the American Revolutionary War, two superpowers at the age, France and Spain, helped the Patriots defeating Britain, who was another superpower. The question rather the Iran War will be successful, we're gonna have to see.
